Training & Certification

All staff members of Above and Beyond Care are qualified with comprehensive training and certificates on a client-need basis. Above and Beyond Care offers courses for their staff members, some of which are listed below:

  1. Open Future Learning exclusively serves the learning disability workforce with online courses. We focus on the following 9 courses:
    • Abuse Prevention (Long & Short Versions) - This module offers one of the only dedicated abuse prevention and safeguarding trainings that is specialized to the needs of the disability sector.
    • Autism - This module combines an introduction to autism with a broad range of practical strategies and approaches. The short films within the module balance the personal perspectives of people who have autism, with the opinions and experiences of several leading professionals.
    • Trauma Informed Care - This module helps staff to understand the biology of trauma and enables them to recognize, and most importantly support and help heal, the trauma that people have experienced.
    • Challenging Behaviours - This module introduces some approaches and strategies staff can use to help individuals to move beyond difficult behaviour.
    • Health and Safety - This module helps staff to understand their roles and responsibilities relating to health and safety in the workplace. It also teaches the purpose of risk assessments and how to conduct basic assessments of risk.
    • Boundaries - This module explains what boundaries are and why they are important for both staff and the individuals they support. It also teaches the importance of and difference between public and private places, spaces and information.
    • Mental Health - This module explores mental health, mental illness and what staff can do to protect and promote the mental health of the individuals they support and assist.
    • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Supporting - This module provides staff with the knowledge and skills to support individuals impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure.
    • Epilepsy - This module helps staff to better understand what epilepsy is, how it affects people and what they can do to best assist the individuals they support.
  2. Medication Administration offers topics and best practices for medicine administration and was developed by Registered Nurses, in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).
  3. Alberta Food Safety (AHS) educates individuals on safe food handling practices, foodborne illnesses, and hygiene to ensure public health safety.
  4. First Aid/CPR equips staff with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to medical emergencies until professional help arrives.
  5. Safe Bathing & Showering (ACDS) ensures that staff have the knowledge, skills and support they need to keep individuals safe while bathing and showering.
  6. CPI Non-Violent Crisis Intervention equips staff with problem-solving and decision-making skills to recognize the level of risk and apply the most appropriate verbal and/or physical interventions.
  7. Abuse Prevention & Response Protocol identifies proactive strategies for preventing abuse, and procedures to follow when responding to allegations of abuse, including addressing the immediate safety and security needs of the individual they provide care for.
  8. Positive Behaviour Support (ACDS) provides foundational knowledge on understanding the individual, building trust, and developing relationships to better support individuals during challenging behaviours.
  9. Trauma Informed Care (AHS) focuses on enhancing knowledge of trauma- informed care and developing trauma-focused skills for practice. It is relevant for health care providers who support people with any traumatic experience.
  10. Diversity & Inclusion educates staff and management about the importance of embracing differences in race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, and other identity factors.
  11. Workplace Violence & Harassment (WHMIS) equips staff with the knowledge of violence and harassment warning signs, types of violence, and common prevention techniques.
